Building a staff performance culture in your gym

28 Feb 2026 1 min read

Staff performance culture fails when targets feel arbitrary or data feels rigged. It succeeds when everyone sees the same numbers, updated live, tied to actions they control: collections logged, renewals closed, enquiries converted, PT sold.

Set targets per role

Front desk, sales, PT coach: different jobs, different metrics. A fair leaderboard compares like with like. Publish targets at the start of the month. No moving goalposts mid-cycle.

Log every payment against staff

If payments are anonymous, performance culture dies. Train desk to select staff on every transaction. Audit weekly for blanks.

Weekly huddle, five minutes

Review the board. Celebrate top performer. Ask one person what blocked them. No long meetings. Consistency beats intensity.

Reward without humiliation

Public ranking motivates some. Demotivates others. Pair leaderboard with private coaching for bottom quartile. Goal is improvement, not spectacle.

The bottom line

Culture is what you measure and what you talk about every week. Software gives you the numbers. Leadership gives them meaning.
